1780pt lists for Showcase
« on: Feb 21, 2013 07:02AM »

Woke up at like 2am with bizarre insomnia and thought I'd collect the 1780 lists I own that have a decent amount of competitiveness. No real idea yet what I want to play, lots of choices though. If any lists stick out as good or not so good looking please help me out by Identifying them so I can either take a closer look, or eliminate them as options.

Thanks

Just to elaborate, I think the Hungarians have the best combination of units on the attack. The Panthers oversee the action, while your Zrinyi and pioneers destroy whatever is on the objective. The motorcycle scouts, in my opinion, are the best recon in the game; they protect your tanks from TDs. Plus, you've played this list before, with very good results

I don't think I need to elaborate on why Panzer Lehr is good - especially with six Pumas to protect the Panthers. Moreover, there isn't a tank company in the game that's going to beat you in any of the defensive missions.

I have two possibilities for my AI:

OPTION 1: Tank Destroyers
HQ
AI Platoon
AI Platoon
Recon Platoon with extra Bazooka
Armored Mortars (with .50 cals)
Tank Platoon (2x Easy Eight, 2x M4A3 lates)
Tank Destroyers (4x Hellcats)

OPTION 2: Abrams
HQ
Abrams (M4A3 (76mm))
AI Platoon
AI Platoon
Recon Platoon with extra Bazooka
Armored Mortars
Tank Platoon (2x Easy Eight, 2x M4A3)
Light Tank Platoon (5x Stuart)

The TD list has far more AT 13 firepower and the psychological advantage of a double ambush on defense. The Abrams list has less AT 13 firepower, but has a spearhead move, mission tactics for the AI and Recon platoons, and stormtroopers for one platoon a turn. In the right circumstances, I could have a Turn One assault with an AI platoon.

Mike Both are very good.

One idea I had though is that at 1780 it is just barely possible to have your cake and eat it to, if you trim every ounce of fat in the AI list. Its just a question of where to cut points, and you can just barely make a hybrid of the 2 lists.

By dropping one or both AI plts to smaller sized platoons(still decent size at 4 rifles, 4 bazookas, 2 LMG, and 60mm mortar), or dropping a sherman, you could do something like the following. You might also be able to fit in abrams by taking him in the crappy sherman, but I'd rather have him in a 76mm as independant tank teams with big guns are really good.

Abrams/Hellcat Hybrid
HQ
Abrams (M4A3 (76mm)) (ends up with same number of tanks as the TD list, but more 76mm hulls)
AI Platoon
AI Platoon
Recon Platoon with extra Bazooka
Armored Mortars(2x mortars, no .50cal)
Tank Platoon (1x Easy Eight, 1x M4A3(76mm), 1x M4(105)(could also go with 2 M4A3(76mm), and 1x M4A3(105)) (I love that -10/-15pt 105mm sherman, breakthru gun, FA 7, protected ammo, a 1 gun bombardment, only downside is rof 1, but he's ablative vs tanks anyhow)
TD platoon (4x Hellcat)

Abrams/M10 Hybrid, the "Zero-fat AI list"
HQ
Abrams (M4A3 (76mm))
AI Platoon
AI Platoon (smaller sized)
Recon Platoon with extra Bazooka
Armored Mortars(2x mortars, no .50cal)
Tank Platoon (2x M4A1(76mm), 1x M4(105), 1x M4) (even detroits finest must go)
TD platoon (4x M10) (even had to cut the 5pts for M10s vs hellcats)

Either way, I'd never want to have to attack either of these as I'd likely be dealing with a unit of shermans in ambush, plus the TDs, and a full unit of AI dug in on an objective. When on the attack you can spearhead with TDs and Shermans, or AI and Shermans, never mind the grossness of ST on a unit of TDs.

Here's another variant on the Abrams/Hellcat list that gets in under 1780 points:

Abrams/Hellcat Hybrid v2
HQ
Abrams (M4A3 (76mm))
AI Platoon
AI Platoon
Cavalry Recon Patrol
Armored Mortars(2x mortars, no .50cal)
Tank Platoon (2x Easy Eight, 1x M4A3(105))
TD platoon (4x Hellcat)

The Cavalry Recon is more fragile than the regular AI recon with bazooka, but I've used it successfully many times. And I still get my two Easy Eights, with one ablative 105, and two full AI platoons.

That'd work quite well too. Another possibility would be to take the cav recon in the M10 list. I believe that'd free 20pts, which would be enough to make all the shermans into detroit's finest ones.

I think the Hybrid lists are probably slightly better than the other two, but not much.

Personally I'd give a slight edge to the Abrams/M10 list, but the differences between it and the two M18 hybrid lists aren't significant enough that one is better than the other. It'd come down to style and preference.

One thing that occurs to me particularly with stabilized vehicles with ST is to give everybody duckbills if there's a good amount of terrain and do the ST shuffle combined with the stabilized shots(this would make russian tanks with Hen and chicks cry alot). If you did this though all benefit of detroit's finest would be lost, and the e8s smooth ride ability would be mostly wasted, I think this is the main reason I prefer the M10 list by a small amount (i'm not certain if the M10s also get duckbills in this case or not; they should as they are a sherman hull and were equipped with duckbill tracks sometimes).

@ Phillip: I'll have to play test a couple of these to see if Abrams is worth the points. He wasn't in the tank company, but he just might be in the AI company.

@Chris: I think the Canadian list looks very good. You might also want to experiment with a Motor Platoon in place of the HQ Shermans. A second infantry platoon can be very helpful as backup, in case your Rifles get pinned at the wrong moment.

I tend to just randomly make lists whenever I'm bored or something, so I end up with a lot of them.

Chris, can't the canadian tanks take wasps? having some FT armed vehicles can be quite handy.

Also, is there a way to get the achilles up to full strength? Even if you have to go to 3 shermans, 1firefly, It'd be worth it.

Ideally you'd want something like this, and be SAR if possible(I don't own the allied MG book so I don't know the points).
HQ:
Sherman/FF plt
Sherman/FF plt
Recon unit of some sort
Wasps
Achilles
Infantry with Kangaroos

I went through and eliminated a couple of lists.

Sadly I felt I had to drop the hungarians as the Zrinyi II are great, but fragile as a unit of 3 and have no ST to try and escape, and the panthers lack protected ammo and are allied so no rerolling remounts or a platoon morale. While a fun list, I fear the list will hemorage points over a 6 game tournament and I'm too dependant on the panthers for all the AT work.

I also made some of the one's I think best glow. Pz Lehr and the Glider rifles currently seem the strongest forces with large platoons with integral AT, and lots of Def. Fire. Gliders can even ignore the first platoon lost for vp if I don't attach everything.

The Panzers to the Meuse tank and infantry lists are a close second(as would the FBB tanks if they change it to allow Remer with them.)

My first instinct was to go with a 101st list out of Nuts!, but on reflection, I think I would be better off with a 101st list out of Market Garden.

Pro #1--4 x AT 15 Fireflies w Semi-indirect fire!
Pro #2--I have 2+ years experience with the list.
Pro #3--Nearly everything I need is already painted!
Con #1--Allied platoons.

Current working list:

HQ w SMG upgrade (60)--2 x SMG
HQ Bazooka (20)--1 x Bazooka
Para Rifle Platoon (265)--1 x SMG, 6 x Rifle/MG, 1 x 60mm mortar, 1 x bazooka
Para Rifle Platoon (265)--1 x SMG, 6 x Rifle/MG, 1 x 60mm mortar, 1 x bazooka
Airborne Divisional Recon (110)--4 x .50 cal Recon Jeeps
Para Field Artillery (135)--4 x 75mm pack
Guards Armoured Platoon (435)--2 x Sherman V, 2 x Firefly
.50 cal AA MG upgrade (5)
Guards Armoured Platoon (435)--2 x Sherman V, 2 x Firefly
.50 cal AA MG upgrade (5)
AOP (40)

Total: 1775

Solid list but the 5 pts left over really bugs me.

If I drop the HQ bazooka I can replace the PFAB with 6 tubes of CT Glider 105s w jeep transports. That's 1780 on the dot, but not sure if its worth it.

Its interesting to note this was basically my 1750 list before the MG revisions came out.

The list is looking good, Tom. To get to 1780, just dump the SMG upgrade on the company HQ teams (far too expensive in my opinion) and one of the .50 cal upgrades on your tank platoons. That gives you forty points for two more Bazookas, which are always worthwhile.

@Phillip: If you don't think the Hungarians are resilient enough, then I would say go with Panzer Lehr. The American gliders are a fine list, too, but the Axis has been very good for you over the years and I think you'll appreciate the extra mobility of the Lehr platoons.

@ Tom:  I think the list looks good.  Mike's tweaks I think will make it worthwhile.

@Phil:  Having faced Sean's Panzer Lehr before, I know how potent it can be.  I would say this is your best bet.  Also, I can get Wasps, but losing recon for some fairly soft flame tanks is, I don't think, a worthwhile tradeoff.  If it was Crocodiles I'd say yes.  The Achille's do not get SiF, so dropping 1 FF just to add two guns with no rerolls is a mixed exchange.  SAR is slightly more expensive than the Tank Squadron.  This is due the pseudo recon abilities the Tank troops get.  But points sucked in there might mean less points elsewhere.

And nobody had any thoughts on the Panzerbrigade list I posted?  I think it's a good list and should be given the same consideration as my Canadians.
