1780pt forces for next year's season
« on: Aug 16, 2012 07:42PM »

Just fiddled around with some easy army forces while doing laundry and came up with some 1780pt LW forces for next years season.
I figured people could put thier 1780 point forces up and we could collective comment on various lists

1st up my standard SP Arty regiment with an additional ISU-122 and a bigger recce unit(or limited sturmoviks)

Pros with this force:
Tremendous anti-infantry Firepower
Good AT power
Good recce(10 teams, though in one unit)
Decent assault power
Good Armor

Cons:
Weak vs Panthers, KTs (possible to compensate for by adding air, at the expense of other things)
only average mobility
No MGs on the tanks makes them vulnerable to assault by tank hunting infantry(top 2 in large part counteracts this, and I can often minimize this by staying 11" away)

Next is my panzerspah:

Pros:
Speed, speed, speed
Good AT and AP power
Good assault power
Best Recce ever

Weaknesses
Defending in mobile battles
3 Fragile platoons
AT power is almost entirely concentrated in the panthers, may not be able to cover all avenues of approach against a large tank force.

EDIT: added a Variant

HQ
1x 234/1

Combat platoons
Panzerspah patrol
3x Puma

Pros:
Speed, Speed, Speed!
Excellent Recon ability
Good AT power (12x AT 13 guns)
3x TD ambushes
decent assault power

Cons:
Nearly totally dependant upon the AI for Assaults(no redundancy here)
Everything is very fragile (Esp the stupid greyhound/jeep units)
defending in mobile battles

2nd ID Fortified company

Pros:
Auto Defend(thanks to roadblock platoon)
Very nasty infantry Platoons (after attachments 1x SMG, 6x rifle, 5x Bazooka, 2x HMG)
Armored reserves doesn't affect at all the tanks are top 0
2x TD Ambushes
16" double in terrain for infantry
great assault power
bulldog vs SS

Cons:
Will be tempted to stick the roadblock platoon in reserve and thus lose the mines and wire
TDs are fragile
no recce other than the TDs
In big trouble if I play another Fortified company as I'll only have the Roadblock unit.

Non-auto defend 2ID

Pros: mostly same as the Auto defend one
Adds Recce that isn't TDs
two utterly Impenetrable infantry platoons (7xSMG, 5x Bazooka, 4x HMG) (a CV platoon that is above Quantity of Quality, lol)
Can be 8 platoons instead of 6 if I don't do any Combat attachments

Cons:
Will have to attack other infantry some times

Truth be told, I'm still trying to find a late war German list that catches my interest enough to build.  1780 is alot of points.  I'm looking at Kampfgruppe Pieper from Devils Charge, Schwere Panzer list from Grey Wolf, or Kampfgruppe Bake from Greywolf.  What would you recommend ace of aces?

Well sounds like you want to do tigers no matter what.

Here's my thoughts:

503rd Tigers from E&S(which is the same unit that was the tigers of KG Bake) are probably the best tiger list currently at 1780 you can have: 5 Tiger I (platoon of 3 and full HQ, 1 Tiger II, 2 Unarmored AA(they at least have gun shields), and 4x 10.5 (SF) 39H Beute StuHs which are rof 2 Breakthrough guns that can bombard or smoke too. (too bad its not like 1790 or you could get recce instead of the AA) alternatively you could take RT 88s instead of the AA.

On Bake, its a bit tough to make 1780, especially since you'll need a bigger tiger platoon for assaults to dig out infantry platoons. At 1780 you can have Bake in a panther, 3 Panthers, 3 tigers, Panzerpioneers(with a Knacker not a faust), and recce.

GW schwere panzers are easy to build but a bit one dimensional. You can get 7 Tiger Is, full unit of motorcycle scouts, and 3 Flakpanzer 38(t) at 1780.

Piper is tough in a sense as they have so many options, however, unless you want KTs, wiking is so much better because of kanones.
Best I've come up with is 4x KTs(full HQ and 2 in a unit), 3x 234/1, Heavy platoon with just the MG section and its 251/17s, and 4 Grilles. There's also a lot of merit in the 3x KT plus 3x panther route, You'd lose the Grilles and add a mortar section to do that. The trouble with piper is that its hard to get a decent assault element in and Grilles are the only Breakthu gun weapon available.

There's also the Elephant company which I think has potential with the addition of some breakthru guns(no tiger aces though). Best for them would be the uparmored Porsche Tiger I HQ, a bergepanther 2cm quad(which becomes a platoon by itself), 3 Elephants, 4  StuH, and full scouts with schwimmwagons.

Not specifically, But my first attempt at a LW panzer kompanie fell flat during Bagration.  So I was thinking something a little different.  I also like the 150. Panzerbrigade list from Devils charge. It looks like a great chance for some neat modeling, but I just don't know how competitive a list it will be.

150 pzbrigade is ok, not great mind you, but nothing wrong with them. Best LW panzer lists are either a plane jane List from GW made of mostly PzIVs and some panthers, or Wiking. BTw have you read the post on the BF about Panzer Tactics by Dan Larsen? Panzers in general are a bit tricky to run so require finesse, deliberateness and patience to win.

I have a hard time designing 150th for 1780, 1575 is easy: 4x Panther, 4x Stug, 3x Greyhounds, Gepanzerte infantry and done, I don't know how best to spend the remaining 210pts to get to 1780. I suppose you could add Air and some commando teams, or a small mortar platoon and small pak40 platoon.

Wiking is easy for 1750, but you can always change one of the recce patrols to mortars and add a bergepanther or something to get to 1780

2x Panther
5x Panther and Kannone
4x Stug and Kannone
2x 8rads
2x 8rads

Panzers from the forces book at 1780
2x Panther
3x Panther
5x PzIVH
4x Brummbar
1x Sd Kfz 250/1(recce) and 2x Sd Kfz 250/9

My options for next year's campaign are pretty simple:

Armored Infantry Company (CV)

HQ
2x AI Platoons (full)
Recon Platoon
Armored Mortar Platoon (3x mortars)
2x Tank Platoons (2x E8, 2x A3)

Tank Company (CV)
HQ E8 with improvised armor
2x Tank Platoons (2x E8, 2x A3 late)
AI Platoon (full)
Recon Platoon
Armored Mortar Platoon (3x mortars)
Cavalry Recon Platoon

Both lists are fast, flexible, and hard hitting. The main difference is that the AI is mechanized, and thus will not have to attack into a tank company in defensive missions. It also has a 50% chance of defending versus the dreaded TD company. The tank company would put me in the driver's seat for most games, which is where I prefer to be, but is vulnerable to the TD company and massed infantry with integral AT assets.

PS. One variant on the tank company is to drop the mortars and cavalry recon for Abrams in Thunderbolt VI (the regular 76mm Sherman). This makes it even faster, but with only four platoons and one recon unit, makes is more vulnerable to the TD company.

Mike, I like both lists quite alot. I think I prefer the AI somewhat.

BTW, It's possible to keep 6 platoons and get Abrams in the Tank list.

If you reduce one of the tank platoons to just regular shermans and one 105 sherman, you can keep the cav recce, full ARP, and reduced strength mortars, you still have 80 points which is enough for a small Recon platoon, or some trained platoons.

You end up weakening one platoon by a fair bit, but the other is quite nasty as with abrams and the CO, you can have 3 E8s, and a 76 sherman.

One other thing that might be worth considering is adding abrams into an AI force, 2 spearhead moves, and the ability to ST actually are quite useful for AI when they attack, and an independant tank is of huge benefit in an infantry force.

1780 AI company
HQ
Abrams in E8
Full ARP
Reduced ARP (still 11 teams)
Full Recon with bazooka
Reduced Mortars
4x Wolverines
2x E8s, 1x M4A3 105

US Second Infantry Division (Devil's Charge)--Confident Veteran

HQ (2 x SMG)
Rifle Platoon (1 x SMG, 6 x Rifle, 4 x Bazooka)
Rifle Platoon (1 x SMG, 6 x Rifle, 4 x Bazooka)
Intel and Recon Platoon (4 x Jeep w .50 cal AA MG)
Tank Platoon (4 x M3A3 (76) w Improvised Armor)
Tank Destroyer Platoon (4 x M10)
Field Artillery Battery (4 x 105mm howitzers)
AOP

I had 20 points left over, so I added Improvised Armor to the tanks.

If I drop the Improvised Armor and the .50 cal AA MG on the Recon jeeps, I'd have 35 pts for Audie Murphy. But I refuse to field Audie Murphy in a 2ID list. He served in the 3ID, damnit!

Should be solid on defense with enough mobility to attack when necessary.

I will have to figure out the intricacies of TDs.

When NUTS! comes out, I'll be fielding a 101st list, of course. ;)
