Jared's MERCS CCC "Gears of War" Tribute
« on: Mar 28, 2012 05:40PM »

Hey guys!  I wanted to share my MERCS build up with you all so I decided to make a project log here.  Hope you enjoy it and of course if you have any questions post them up...

CCCJ (Chicago Cincinnati Cleveland Jacinto) is a MERCS CCC faction convert.  I'm a die hard Gears of War fan and these models SCREAM Gears in my opinion.  Even their game rules seem Gears of War to me.  So I decided who I wanted to create and got on with the project.

My goal was to create my two favorite characters (the avatars I use in the multiplayer GOW games for xbox360) and the then for fun factor and a bit of humor, all of the Carmine brothers.  The Carmine's include the 3 brothers that appear throughout the 3 games and then a 4th one that I believe is hinted at but never revealed.  The going theme is basically that they die throughout the trilogy.  So like Yeoman Johnson who accompanied all the main characters to the planet surface in the Star Trek series of old only to then be a victim of the planets treachery as a way to show how dangerous it is...you don't want to be a Carmine going into Gears of War.

First is my Colonel Hoffman conversion.  This was my go-to character in GOW2.  Assault Leader Hoffman as I refer to him for MERCS purposes was fairly simple.  He needed a bigger waist, a non-helmeted head, a military cap and of course the classic COG weapon, a Lancer.  Here's some pics of how I pulled this off...

Next up was my current favorite character in GOW3, Mechanic Baird.  (Mostly because Hoffman unlocks at level 50 and I haven't hit 50 yet but still a favorite.)  The CCC Sniper was the easy choice as it's almost Mechanic Baird already.  Minor modifications made here.  I extended the brim on the backwards ball cap, traded out the flimsy metal sniper barrel for a sturdy piece of paperclip and that was that.

On to the Carmine's!  Here's the breakdown on their lineage:

                                 Unknown Father--+--Unknown Mother
                                                           |
                                                           |
Anthony Carmine---Benjamin Carmine------Clayton Carmine---Fourth Carmine Brother (name unknown)

First up is CCCJ Medic Anthony Carmine with nothing more than a Lancer added.  Again I can't stress to you enough how much these models already look Gears-ish...

CCCJ Demolition Benjamin Carmine was fun and may be my favorite convert.  The Lancer once again but due to the Demos grenade rules I simple could not pass up the opportunity to make a GOW-style frag grenade.  "FRAG OUT!"

With Anthony and Benjamin covered I needed to decide which of the last 2 models would end up being the Unknown brother.  After scrutinizing over the choice I opted to make Clayton, the eldest and I have to believe the largest most muscular of the four, the CCCJ Incinerator.  It was simply a matter of size.  The MERCS CCC Incinerator model is a bigger piece.  Which is odd in a way because the model as sculpted is supposed to be a girl named 'Kat'.  Anyway with that decided on it was time to complete both conversions.  First up is the unknown brother and for my purposes the CCCJ Heavy.  I moved the bullet belt off the backpack and to the otherside of the mini-gun and added the handcrank to make it more like a "Grinder" as it appears in the game...

Now Clayton may be my personal tie for first or at least a superclose second place.  I'm really proud of what I did here and I've had my share of compliments on this one in the store.  CCCJ Incinerator Clayton Carmine required bare arms to reflect the avatar for his character in GOW3.  The challenge was this metal mini had armored arms.  My original thought was to replace the arms with Games Workshop Imperial Guard catachan jungle fighter arms.  However after looking closes I decided, "What a great project to practice my Dremel Stylus skills on."  I used a shaving bit to shave away all the surface armor and then used a fine grinding bit to actually file away grooves to act as creases for muscles.  You'll see how good it came out later in the painting stages but it is one of my favorite conversions I've done to date.  Along with the arms I also re-posed that ridiculously sculpted "ballet" leg this model otherwise has.

Jared this has inspired me to most definitely collect another army once I'm done with my Menoth just so I can learn from you how to make them at least half as awesome as your Gears of War mercs. They looked awesome on the table the other day too.

As a huge Gears fan myself, I love your concept - I actually considered doing this with some 40k models a long while back. Not knowing Mercs models makes it hard for me to make out too much detail on these base metals (iPhone screen doesn't make it easier!) but I can't wait to see painted pics!

Jared - I may be resurrecting something that doesn't need resurrecting here, but did you ever get around to painting these models?

I did actually!  I should get some updated pics.  I'm no expert in the painting department but these are fully based and painted.  thanks for asking, I'll see what I can get for a pic or two.
